SRI LANKAN CUISINE
Sri Lankan cuisine is similar to the cuisine of South India, in its use of chilli, cardamom, cumin, coriander and other spices, but it is generally much spicier and has its own distinctive taste, due to the addition of ingredients such as Maldive fish and herbal spicy greens.
A typical Sri Lankan meal will consist of a main curry and rice, along with several other vegetable dishes/curries. Kiribath is a well-known Sri Lankan rice dish, meaning milk rice. Side-dishes include pickle, chutney and sambol. The most famous of these is the coconut sambol, made of fragrant coconut mixed with chili, dried Maldive fish and lime juice & crushed to a flowery mix. This can be eaten with rice, as it gives zest to the meal and used to increase appetite.
In addition to sambol, mallung is also eaten – a dish of chopped edible leaves mixed with grated coconut and red onions.
There are many varieties of food like hoppers, string hoppers, pittu and rotty made out of rice flower and eaten with spicy curries and sambol, which are specialities at Riviera Resort. Milder curries are also available on request, so that the food caters for all tastes.
